# Get started with Device Inventory

{% hint style="info" %}
Requires version 10.1 or higher.
{% endhint %}

You can get started quickly with OneSite Device Inventory by starting a free trial. This is a great way to pilot data collection with a few devices and utilize both the device inventory dashboards and dynamic dashboards created by OneSite Aida.

{% hint style="info" %}
To purchase and register a Device Inventory license, see [License your OneSite solution](https://docs.adaptiva.com/platform-guide/overview/license-solution).
{% endhint %}

1. Login in the OneSite Admin Portal.
2. Click the **gear icon > Product Licensing**.
3. Click **Start Free Trial** and select **OneSite Device Inventory with AI** or **OneSite Device Inventory**.
4. Once the license is added, in the details pane for OneSite Device Inventory with AI, toggle ON **Use All Clients** or click **Browse** to select a specific Group with test devices in it.

## Add Devices

Follow the guidance to [install the Adaptiva client](https://github.com/AdaptivaDocs/docs/blob/main/platform/install-guide/client-install.md) on a few test devices. Ensure that these devices are part of the group targeted by the OneSite Device Inventory license.

For this guide, we will assume all devices are in a Group named "Test Devices".

## Explore Device Inventory

1. On the header navigation, click **OneSite Device Inventory**.

   ![Device Inventory tab](https://4059240068-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FUJDmdO4RKTyVqc8A0mNb%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-2dd8f75a9b668b05a892b7d606e3ff2147799123%2Fheader.png?alt=media)
2. On the Home page, you can see high level data for your device estate as well as Quick Actions to start utilizing Device Inventory.

   ![Device Inventory Home](https://4059240068-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FUJDmdO4RKTyVqc8A0mNb%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-2bcb9e4b368747b96b5d02d59e04118327f00831%2Fhome.png?alt=media)

To start collecting and visualizing data, you need to create an Inventory Strategy and Inventory Categories. A strategy determines what data you collect from your estate and a category customizes your visualization of that data in dashboards.

## Create a Strategy

1. In the left-hand navigation, click Inventory Strategies.
2. In the details pane, click **+ New**.
3. On the Overview page, enter the following:

   * Name: **AD Info**
   * Description: **Gather Active Directory info from Windows clients.**
   * Strategy Enabled: toggled **ON**

Device Inventory will now run the Inventory Strategy on all targeted devices, collecting the sensor data defined by the strategy. In order to properly visualize this information, you will need to create a Inventory Category and define what metrics are useful in your dashboards.

## Create a Category

1. On the left-hand navigation, click **Inventory Categories**.
2. In the details pane, click **New**.

   ![New Inventory Category](https://4059240068-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FUJDmdO4RKTyVqc8A0mNb%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-37bc7fb2b8ca3d17ef9611ac339b2580e15fb138%2Fintentory-new.png?alt=media)
3. In the General Settings section, add the following information:
   * Name: **AD Info**
   * Description: **Display Active Directory information gathered from Windows devices.**
   * Display Icon: **faBallPile**
4. In the Sensor section, click **Browse**.

6. Click **Save**.

## View device data

Now that you have an Inventory Category defined, you can view the collected telemetry data in the device dashboard.

1. On the left-hand navigation, click **Home**.
2. In the All Devices section, click a device.
3. Under per-device Inventory, click the **AD Info** category. Data may take a few moments to populate.

   ![AD Info Dashboard](https://4059240068-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FUJDmdO4RKTyVqc8A0mNb%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-7bf8559a8ebbfe2c8e25493f9cc36e820e3a14a6%2Fadinfo.png?alt=media)

## (Optional) Ask AiDA

You can optionally license and use AiDa with OneSite Device Inventory to query telemetry data and generate dashboards. This also allows you to aggregate data from multiple devices and sensors into a single view.

1. Click **Ask Aida**.
2. In the chat window type "Show me the last time group policy was applied to all windows devices."
3. Click the custom dashboard in the chat to display the data.
