Monitor patch status

Describes how to track the deployment and installation history of a patch.

Sometimes you want to track the progress of a specific patch. For example, you may have users waiting on a specific patch that contains a vital bug fix, or you might be tracking down an issue that you suspect may have been caused by an installed patch.

OneSite Patch provides several built-in dashboards to help you monitor the status of patches and devices, and this topic describes how to use several of these dashboards.

Deployments dashboard

If you want to see what patches have been deployed or are scheduled to be deployed, you can use the Deployments Dashboard. This dashboard enables you to see:

  • Upcoming patch roll outs in the next 30 days.

  • Patches currently in progress.

  • Patches that have been installed in the last 90 days.

View the Deployments dashboard

  1. In OneSite Patch, click Deployments on the left menu to display the dashboard:

View upcoming patches

Click on Patch Rollouts Scheduled (Next 30 Days) to see scheduled patches for the next 30 days. There are also options to see the rollouts for the next day, 7 days, and 14 days.

This displays a table of all patches that are currently scheduled for the next 30 days.

Scheduled patches table

In addition to showing when a patch is scheduled to be deployed, you can also view the Strategy that will deploy the patch in the Patching Strategy column. You can click on the strategies if you need to make modifications to them.

The Applicable column shows the number of devices that the patch will be deployed to, and you can click on the number to see the list of which devices will receive the patch.

View installed patch history

Click on Patches Installed (Last 90 Days) to see patches that have been installed in the last 90 days. There are also options to see the last 7, 30, or 60 days.

This displays a table of all patches deployed in the last 90 days. You can sort by column and filter results to view the status of specific patches.

Patches installed table

The Compliant field contains the number of devices that have the patch currently installed. You can click on the number to see a table that lists the devices and the patch status.

For each device, you can expand > next to the device name to display the history of that patch install:

Patch State dashboard

If you are interested in the status of a specific patch across devices, you can use the Patch State dashboard.

This dashboard enables you to see:

  • Patching strategies that include this patch.

  • The devices that contain the product that the patch targets.

  • The patch status and consistency on each device.

View the Patch State dashboard

  1. In OneSite Patch, click Software on the left menu and select Patches to display the Patching Patch State dashboard:

  2. Scroll down to the Patch Status table that lists all available patches. You can filter or search for specific patches of interest.

  3. Click on a patch to get the Patch State dashboard for that patch.

In the following screenshot, you can see the patch status for Microsoft New Teams x64 version 26183.1903.4892.4448.

In this screenshot, you can see that the patch is included in the Pilot strategy, and the patch is currently installed on 2 devices.

Device patch status

If you are trying to resolve an issue with a specific device, and you want to look at the history and status of patches installed on that device, you can use the Per-Device Patching State dashboard.

This dashboard contains useful information such as:

  • The device activity history.

  • The list of all detected products on the device and their compliance state.

  • Which Strategies target the device.

  • Which Business Units the device is a member of.

View the Per-Device Patching State dashboard

  1. In OneSite Patch, click Asset Management on the left menu and select Devices to display the Patching Device State dashboard.

  2. Scroll down to the bottom to the Device Status table. This table shows a list of all devices.

  3. Find the device you want to inspect in the table and click on the device name to bring up the Per-Device Patching State dashboard.

In the following screenshot, you can see an example dashboard:

The Device Activity panel shows a log of patch activity. This is useful for seeing when patches are scheduled, downloaded, and installed on the device. You can filter the activity log if you want to focus on a specific patch, for example.

At the bottom of the Device Details panel, you can see what Strategies target the device and which Business Units the device is a member of.

The Status Details panel contains a table the lets you inspect the state of either products or patches on the device. This is useful for comparing patch desired states to the patch status on the device.

Blocked patches, rollbacks, and exceptions

If a patch isn't being deployed to a device when you expect it to, it's possible that the patch has been blocked or a user has created a rollback or exception to prevent the patch from being applied.

Blocked patches

Patches can be blocked either by Adaptiva or by users. Adaptiva adds patches automatically to the curated block list for various reasons. The most common reason is that the patch returned a non-zero score from VirusTotal.

To view blocked patches:

  1. In OneSite Patch, from the left side navigation, select Advanced Settings > Flex Controls > Blocklisting > Blocked Patches.

  2. In the Select a Folder pane, either select Curated to see all patches blocked by Adaptiva or select Customer to see patches blocked by a user.

You can click Show All to see all blocked patches.

You can use search to filter the list if you are looking for specific patches.

For more information about blocked patches, see Blocklisting.

Rollbacks and Exceptions

If a device isn't updating a product to a newer patch than is installed, someone may have created either a Rollback or Exception for that patch.

A rollback prevents a specific version of a patch from being installed and automatically installs a previous version of the patch. If a newer patch version is released, the new patch will be applied as normal.

An exception specifies a latest version for a patch, and prevents any newer versions of that patch from installing.

For more information, see Rollbacks and Exceptions.
