# Internet Locations

Description of internet locations

When devices connect to an Adaptiva server from an external internet address, they are assigned to a special system Location type called an *Internet Location*, based on their public IP address.

Internet Locations are transitory, and exist only as long as connected devices are online.

Internet Locations most commonly appear in SaaS server configurations that don't use [on-premises client detection](/platform/user-guide/locations/on-premises-client-detection.md), though they can appear in on-premises servers in certain conditions.

## Limitations and behaviors

Internet Locations have the following characteristics:

* They are configured as **WiFi**.
* They don't appear in **Assets > Locations**.
* They can't be used to define Groups or Business Units.
* All devices from the same public IP address are placed within the same Internet Location, and communicate via unicast.
* Internet Locations are removed if all devices in the Location are offline.

## When the server creates Internet Locations

**SaaS servers:**

* Assigns all devices to Internet Locations by default.
* You can change this behavior by configuring [on-premises client detection](/platform/user-guide/locations/on-premises-client-detection.md) and enabling [Auto Location Creation](/platform/user-guide/locations/auto-location-creation.md).

**On-premises servers:**

* Internet Locations are only created when:
  * Auto Location Creation is disabled, or is only enabled for specific IP ranges and the device is outside that range.
  * The device cannot communicate directly and sends messages to Adaptiva Cloud Services to relay them to the Adaptiva Server.

## Viewing internet clients

Since Internet Locations do not appear in the list of standard Locations, you can use the following steps to view them:

To view these clients:

1. In the Admin Portal, hover over **Assets** and select **Devices**.
2. In the **Devices** table, search or sort by the **Public IP** column to identify clients connecting from internet IP addresses.

When viewing device details, a device in an Internet Location will show the location as **InternetOffice \[** *id* **]**.
